“In every walk with nature, one receives more than he seeks.” -John Muir

You’ve probably heard that physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. When we move our bodies with moderate exercise, we can increase flexibility, decrease blood pressure and promote healthy joints and bones.

But, did you know that these benefits are even greater when we take our activity outdoors into nature?

Consider this: the human body lived in nature for 99.99% of our existence. Only 0.01% of human existence has been lived within the shelter of homes, buildings and vehicles. We are designed to be outdoors! And the benefits are there to prove it.

When we exercise in nature, even for just 5 minutes, we experience an increase in serotonin (a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of happiness and well-being) and a decrease in blood pressure. Walking in nature promotes improved balance (physically and emotionally) and coordination and can even increase self-esteem. And, because we have to watch our step and be more mindful of how we move, when we walk in nature, some of our executive function turns down and our tendency to worry decreases. Wow!

These effects are so profound that the Japanese use “forest bathing” (Shinrin-yoku) as a form of preventive healthcare and healing.

Here in Maryland, we have ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors without traveling far from our homes. And with our mild weather, we can reap the benefits of outdoor activities year-round (which is a welcome change from where I grew up in Central New York!)

Maryland has multiple parks, trails and beaches with varying degrees of elevation change and scenery, so there is something for everyone.

Some of my favorite parks to visit include:

Watkins Regional Park

This park in Upper Marlboro, MD has plenty of mostly flat, beautiful trails. It also has a great playground for the kiddos themed after The Wizard of Oz, a nature center and a petting zoo!

Quiet Waters Park

Located right in Annapolis, MD, Quiet Waters has a shaded trail down to a peaceful pond with water-craft rental. It also has multiple trails and a great playground.

Rosaryville State Park

This park in Clinton, MD has a beautiful scenic trail with lots of small hills for an extra challenge. It’s a popular park for horseback riding, so you may have to step aside and let those graceful animals pass by.

Calvert Cliffs State Park

This park in Lusby, MD is located on the Chesapeake Bay and is popular for its abundance of fossils from sea creatures, especially shark teeth! It has miles of hiking trails and beach access where you can fish.

North-West Branch Trail

This trail is a hidden gem right outside of downtown Silver Spring, MD. You can climb on boulders and dip your feet in the creek. The sound of the bustling water is soothing and the scenery is beautiful.

So, lace up those sneakers (proper footwear is a must!) and get out to enjoy all the great outdoors that awaits you in Maryland!

Wild Kid Acres

Wild Kid Acres, LLC, runs right alongside a section of Rt 214 in Edgewater, MD. The road no longer floods like it used to, most likely thanks to the work done by Martinez and the animals living on the farm.

Maryland Virtual Tours

Spring has officially sprung in the DMV area, and we’ve been getting temps in the 60s and up in Maryland more often than not. The days are getting longer and there is suddenly more time to fill until it’s time to tuck the kids into bed.

National Bird-Feeding Month in Maryland

Did you know that February is National Bird-Feeding Month? Here in Maryland, we are lucky to be home to some beautiful birds that showcase a lot of character.
