Eastern Shore Produce

Spring has sprung- time to do some Spring cleaning of your wellness! One of the best resources for fresh local produce is located right across the Bay Bridge. Fresh fruit and vegetable stands are scattered east and west on Rt. 50 toward Ocean City, Maryland.

I love Spring, but I love Summer more – Why? It is warm! And when things start to warm up it is time to shed some of our winter wellness habits.

1. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! Important in the winter – hydration in warmer months is even more so. Warmer weather means more outside activities and that means sweat. As our bodies are 50-60% water, it is essential to replace those fluids that we sweat out to ensure we keep those heat related injuries at bay. You are already dehydrated when you feel thirsty – so beat that thirsty feeling by drinking sooner and often. And, don’t forget the electrolytes to keep it all in balance.

2. Spring is a great time to lighten up our eating by adding lots of those tasty leafy greens. Leafy greens are a great source of Vitamins like A, B complex, C, E, and minerals like Iron and Magnesium to name a few! Basically, they are just better than a multi vitamin! Leafy greens are also a great source of natural fiber and we all could use more fiber in our diet.

3. Along with all those leafy greens, consider more color in your veggie choices. Eating a rainbow of colorful veggies also provides lot of dense nutritional vitamins and minerals that allow us to play hard all summer long. Don’t forget – all those colored veggies are also great source of fiber. Don’t like them raw? Try steaming them or maybe roasting them with a tad of avocado or olive oil.

4. One last thought – if you are not taking a great probiotic, please start! You are what you absorb! A healthy gut is paramount to good nutritional health and if you are not going to get any nutrition from what you are eating – why eat it?
